The Woodsman, print on glass 34¼” × 34¼”
The Woodsman is an allegorical narrative exploring the consequences of power, family inheritance, personal choices, and the possibility of redemption.
At the center of the composition stands a queen divided by opposing forces. One aspect embodies love, longing, and the desire to nurture life. The other carries the burdens of emotional frailty, distorted truths, and the lingering influence of the past. Above her rests the presence of her mother, whose influence extends across generations and continues to shape the queen’s perception of herself and the world around her.
Throughout the work, symbolic figures reveal fragments of a larger story. A two-faced balance weighs both virtue and suffering. A lover’s memory remains entangled within the scales of fate. A small sprite embodies the unseen wounds left behind by power and privilege, while family relationships unfold through symbols of loyalty, entitlement, and separation.
The Woodsman himself exists as both witness and consequence. As he continues his endless task of cutting through the living forest, he becomes a reminder of choices that cannot be undone and opportunities forever altered by time.
Yet the narrative does not end in darkness. In the upper reaches of the composition, a mystical guide works to dispel shadows and remove obstacles, opening pathways toward renewal. The blank passages within the structure symbolize possibilities not yet written—spaces where healing, forgiveness, and transformation may still emerge.
The raven serves as a guardian presence, representing strength, wisdom, and the enduring protection of ancestral spirits.
Created as part of Shannon Castle’s visionary mythology, The Woodsman invites viewers to discover their own reflections within its layered symbolism, where memory, regret, and redemption coexist within a single story.
The Woodsman explores the tension between love and loss, power and consequence, memory and redemption. Through a complex visual mythology populated by ancestral guardians, mystical beings, and symbolic figures, Shannon Castle weaves a narrative of family legacy, personal transformation, and the possibility of healing. Printed on sandblasted glass, the work reveals new details and interpretations with every viewing.
